Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest brought remarks yesterday regarding a compendium of Bills presented in Parliament, including the removal of the Preferential Exemptions Bill.

The full compendium includes The Commercial Entities (Substance Requirements) Bill, 2018; The Removal of Preferential Exemptions Bill, 2018; The Register of Beneficial Ownership Bill, 2018; The Non-Profit Organizations Bill, 2018, and The Penal Code (Amendment) Bill, 2018.

The Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB) will host a ‘Fintech 101’ event next week to help industry professionals get up to speed on the latest developments in financial technology.

The seminar, which is being organised by the BFSB in partnership with Aliv, takes place December 13 at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar under the theme ‘Transforming Financial Markets With Fintech’.

Topics on the agenda include corporate financing, crypto assets, cyber security, fintech regulations and fintech onboarding standards.

Central Bank releases latest economic report

Indications are that the domestic economy continued to show modest signs of improvement over the review period, benefiting from growth in the tourism sector and relatively stable foreign direct investment activity. Reflecting in part the initial effect of the hike in the value added tax (VAT) rate in July of this year, along with gains in international fuel costs, domestic inflation firmed during the 12 months to August.

In the fiscal sector, the deficit contracted during the first quarter of FY2018/19, due to a VAT-led increase in tax receipts, which eclipsed the modest gain in expenditure. Monetary developments featured a decline in bank liquidity, as the falloff in total deposits outpaced the reduction in credit, while foreign currency loan financing to the public sector, underpinned the expansion in external reserves.

TORONTO, November 2018 /PRNewswire/ — The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has partnered with Blockgeeks, The Caribbean Blockchain Alliance (CBA), and The University of The Bahamas, (UB) to provide a comprehensive blockchain developers course for 25 Bahamians on November 30 – December 1, 2018.

Inclusive of a coding bootcamp that utilizes live online training with facilitators, students will participate in a weekend-long hackathon and final exam at the end of this blockchain course. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate that is recorded on a blockchain.
