G20 RussiaThe Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development secretary-general Angel Gurría presented a report to the G20 leaders in St Petersburg in Russia yesterday on proposals on how to tackle tax evasion.

The report consists of two parts:

Part I is the Progress Report to the G20 by the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes delivered to the G20 in April 2013.

G20 RussiaThe Financial Stability Board (FSB) published yesterday the following documents delivered to G20 leaders for the St Petersburg Summit:

  • a letter from the FSB chair, Mark Carney, to the G20 leaders, taking stock of the financial reforms since the global financial crisis and the major outstanding issues which call for the attention of leaders;
  • a narrative progress report, setting out in summary, non-technical language the framework of financial reforms that the FSB is coordinating at the request of G20 Leaders and the remaining steps that need to be taken to complete the reforms;

Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) has selected Huawei Marine Optix BWS 1600S to upgrade the Bahamas Domestic Submarine Network International (BDSNi). Huawei today said the system links more than 20 sites between Bahamas and Haiti and stretches across about 3,500 kilometers, with the longest section of 343 km, addressing needs of e-commerce, e-education, e-trade and e-government on these islands.

While traditional Eurozone property investment hubs like Cyprus and Spain continue to languish, locations further afield have proven a safe haven for savvy buyers.

Barbados and the Bahamas are among the countries reaping the benefits of the Eurozone’s woes. High-end residential and commercial resorts are springing up to meet soaring demand and experts expect them to prove resilient investments.

The two nations, which book-end the Caribbean, share many positive attributes. Both are welcoming of foreign investment (unlike other territories such as Bermuda, which makes buying property difficult for foreign buyers) and offer an increasingly high standard of living. They share time zones with New York City and Toronto and both have currencies pegged to the dollar, making them ideal business hubs. You can also fly direct to both locations from London.
