The government, through the Bahamas Embassy in China, is seeking to explore and create new economic opportunities for Bahamians through all aspects of Bahamian arts and crafts.

On July 15, 2016, Bahamas Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China Paul Andy Gomez met with leaders in the cultural arena to discuss the vast potential of Bahamian arts and culture in Asia. A number of them recently participated in a cultural tour in China.

The president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Caribbean has been re-elected for 2016-17, alongside her deputy, it was announced last week.

Jasmine Davis, first vice president of the Bahamas Institute of Chartered Accountants [BICA] and vice president of patient finance at a leading private medical facility in the Bahamas, has been president of ICAC since June 2015.

The Bahamas Branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) is set to host the 41st Regional Conference of The Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic Region, which includes the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Conference.

“This year marks 287 years of Parliamentary democracy, 49 years of majority rule and on July 10th, 43 years as a sovereign nation,” speaker of The Bahamas House of Assembly Kendal Major said, at a press conference last week at the House of Assembly, announcing the upcoming event.

Junkanoo Summer FestivalHundreds of residents and tourists have been gathering to watch the music competition between A and B Junkanoo Groups, which are all executing the theme “It’s Better In The Bahamas” over the next few weeks.

One after the other, the Junkanoo groups rushed through the large energetic crowd delivering the rhythmic sounds of cowbells, goat skin drums, brass instruments and whistles.

During Saturday’s daytime events at the JSF village, visitors and residents also participated in fun competitions like pineapple, watermelon, and corn eating, crab catching, conch cracking contests.

As the sun began to set, guests enjoyed a well organized opening ceremony that included a performance by the Obeah Man, fire dancers; beller and drummer competitions and an exciting Junkanoo water show with a group using jet skis.

The two stakeholders have signed a $50,000 Memorandum of Understanding for the Innovation Lab at the Harry C. Moore Library and Information Centre, COB. The new initiative is expected to enhance the technological talents of the college’s students.

Leon Williams, CEO of BTC, said technology is of “utmost” importance. He described the occasion as a Blue Letter Day that is nothing short of “revolutionary”.

LPIA expands automated passport service

Effective July 1, US-bound passengers travelling on B1 or B2 visas with electronic passports can use the Automated Passport Control kiosks at Lynden Pindling International Airport.

Effective July 1, US-bound passengers travelling on B1 or B2 visas with electronic passports (e-passports) can use the Automated Passport Control (APC) kiosks at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA).

This expanded clearance now allows many Bahamian passengers to use the self-service kiosks in the US Customs and Border Protection hall.
