Weber ShandwickThe Ministry of Tourism has engaged PR firm Weber Shandwick to provide communications support in the key markets of US and Canada, as well as project work in the UK and Latin America.

The global communications firm previously worked with the Ministry for 18 years before ending the contract in 2013 due to budget restructuring.

It will now collaborate again with the Ministry to promote The Bahamas abroad, developing a comprehensive strategy to market the islands. Weber Shandwick said it would use an integrated approach to reach customers with greater efficiency and effectiveness.

Minister of State for Grand Bahama Kwasi Thompson was joined by a number of government and Parliamentary colleagues during a tour of Grand Bahama Shipyard recently.

The tour came following a meeting by the team and executives from the shipyard, where discussions on the success of the shipyard, the apprenticeship programme and the future of the maritime business in Grand Bahama took place.

The Bahamas Financial Services Board and the Insurance Commission of The Bahamas are partnering again to provide two full scholarships for the Associates in Captive Insurance designation offered by the International Center for Captive Insurance Education.

The Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB) and the Insurance Commission of The Bahamas (ICB) are partnering again to provide two (2) full scholarships for the Associates in Captive Insurance (ACI) designation offered by the International Center for Captive Insurance Education (ICCIE).

ICCIE was developed in response to a need expressed by captive insurance professionals for in-depth educational offerings, information on current topics, and a professional designation. Despite a strong pattern of expansion in captive insurance companies, research showed that there was a critical lack of education and training in the industry that, if not corrected, could affect its continued growth and professionalism.

Preliminary evidence suggests that domestic economic activity remained mildly positive during the month of June, as output in the construction sector continued to be buoyed by foreign investment projects, and to a lesser extent, public sector rebuilding activity. In contrast, the tourism sector’s performance remained soft, reflecting largely the loss of significant room inventory in one major market.

A maritime attorney with a local law firm says The Bahamas is only steps away from regaining its position as one of the world’s most respected and sought after shipping registries.

Syneisha Bootle, a maritime specialist with Callenders & Co, said the country is poised to regain its position among the world’s fastest growing ship registries, but it must take two steps: update maritime legislation including a half century old Insurance Act and enact new legislation with strict enforcement provisions.

Grand Bahama Ministry of TourismHoping to boost the profile of Grand Bahama’s Port Lucaya Marketplace, the Ministry of Tourism launched its first ‘Taste of Port Lucaya’ event last week, inviting tourists and locals to enjoy live entertainment, sample Bahamian food and browse the marketplace’s shops.

The ‘Taste of Port Lucaya’ took place Thursday 3 August and will run every other Friday until November. The event’s sponsors include the Ministry of Tourism & Aviation, BTC, the Grand Bahama Port Authority, the Grand Bahama Island Promotion Board and Port Lucaya and it was spearheaded by the Office of the Prime Minister.
