PM: Family Islands key to sustainable growth

Delivering the keynote address at the Official Opening Ceremony of the Department of Local Government’s Leadership Training Conference earlier in the week, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said the government has a responsibility to ensure that the Family Islands are platforms for development by investing in infrastructure and other public amenities.

Delivering the keynote address at the Official Opening Ceremony of the Department of Local Government’s Leadership Training Conference earlier in the week, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said the government has a responsibility to ensure that the Family Islands are platforms for development by investing in infrastructure and other public amenities.

He said the administration is committed to providing Crown Land grants to Bahamians – especially descendants of the various Family Islands – for a variety of economic projects, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said earlier this week.

IDBCaribbean head of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Therese Turner Jones has urged the region to learn new methods and apply novel solutions to coastal management, while optimizing and refining existing capabilities.

Speaking at the IDB’s Caribbean Coastal Resilience Forum, which was held at The Island House resort in The Bahamas earlier this week, Turner Jones said that embracing innovative technology and its attendant efficiency gains, as well as capturing, analyzing and applying “big and dynamic” data is essential to creating coastal resilience across the Caribbean.

As the government continues its quest to make Grand Bahama the centre for industry and innovation, and the entrepreneurial hub, it is important to embrace new ways to resolve matters and maintain respect and peace among members of the community, according to Minister of State for Grand Bahama Kwasi Thompson.

The Minister’s remarks came during the opening of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Seminar, which was held at Pelican Bay Resort September 21, 2017. The seminar was attended by local lawyers, business owners and executives of the Grand Bahama Port Authority.

Minister Thompson told attendees that as with all new initiatives, local support is needed in order to be effective. Therefore, he suggested partnership and cooperation among Grand Bahamians as a major component of Grand Bahama’s revitalization.

IDBThe Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) today opened its Caribbean Coastal Resilience Forum, the first of its kind in The Bahamas, under the theme “Innovation, Best-practice and Partnerships”.

A timely event given the passage of recent hurricanes Irma, Maria, and Matthew in 2016 and Joaquin 2015, the forum has assembled leading scientists, technical experts and policymakers from nine Caribbean countries to participate in the two-day conclave being held at The Island House near Lyford Cay.

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Today, Atlantis, Paradise Island resort in The Bahamas announced the immediate appointment of Audrey Oswell as President and Managing Director.

Oswell has held the role of Chief Operating Officer at the resort since the end of 2016 and had previously held the role of Chief Gaming Officer at Atlantis from 2011 to 2013. With this appointment, Oswell becomes the first female President of Atlantis, Paradise Island.

According to Andrea Balkan, Managing Partner of Brookfield Asset Management, owners of the resort, “we are extremely pleased that Audrey will elevate her leadership role at the resort, especially as she was an integral part of the team that was involved in creating the new vision and direction of Atlantis. “For The Bahamas perhaps it is that we had become complacent, assuming that our investment climate was the best in the region given our relative success in attracting foreign investment and maintaining a stable economy.”
