Here follows remarks by Joy Jibrilu chair of the board of directors Caribbean Tourism Organization and director general at the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, at the State of the Tourism Industry Conference 13 October, 2017 Radisson Beach Resort Grenada:

This has been one of the most important weeks in our recent history, with this conference coming in the wake of two of the most vicious hurricanes ever to hit the region, both in terms of intensity and the unforgiving nature of the devastation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the theme of this year’s Diplomatic Week as ‘Innovative Approaches to A Changing World’.

The week of activities will get underway with a Church Service at Christ Church Cathedral 15 October.

This is the 4th year of the event and will be marked with attendance by the entire diplomatic corps of The Bahamas, both resident and non-resident.

The Commonwealth will unveil a package of legislative reform tools at its Law Ministers Meeting (CLMM) in Nassau, The Bahamas, 16-19 October 2017.

Commonwealth secretary-general Patricia Scotland said the organisation’s new legislative drafting handbook and law reform guide will help governments effectively respond to contemporary challenges such as terrorism, climate change, child marriage and cybercrime.

Tourism Minister: Region will recover, rebuild

Addressing Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said that his administration is resolute in bringing fiscal discipline and order to public finances to forestall any possible economic consequences that could cripple growth and the longer-term prospects for the country.

“If we do not get our economic house in order, the foundation and the house are at risk of collapse,” Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis told Parliament October 11.

Caribbean Tourism OrganizationThe 2017 State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC) officially opened 10 October at the Radisson Grenada Beach Resort, Grand Anse, Grenada.

Delegates from member countries of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) will be attending the event.

Earlier in the day, Joy Jibrilu, director general of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, spoke at a media briefing highlighting the growth in that country’s tourism industry and also some of the challenges being faced. The growth, she said, was largely attributed to opening of the Baha Mar resort on Cable Beach. She also noted an increase in airlift to The Bahamas, independently initiated by carriers.
