Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest said The Bahamas government is legislating to ensure that the country continues to meet international expectations for anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism.

“We also support our financial regulators, as they supervise their licensed entities in a fashion calculated to minimise financial crime,” DPM Turnquest said at a press conference at the Ministry of Finance last week announcing plans for the upcoming 2018 National AML/CFT (Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism) Conference to be hosted by The Central Bank of The Bahamas and other partners.

The first Bahamian blockchain start-up PO8 has officially launched as part of a drive to make Grand Bahama the crypto capital of the Americas. The blockchain ecosystem has been devised to democratize and decentralize the marine archaeology industry.

Bahamas focuses on tech at Commonwealth Business Forum

Minister of State for Grand Bahama Kwasi Thompson, along with the director of investments Candia Ferguson represented the Bahamas government and the island of Grand Bahama at the Commonwealth Business Forum 2018, part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London.

The Commonwealth Business Forum is an integral part of CHOGM and brings together businesses critical to trade and investment with government leaders to debate the issues facing their countries in 2018 and beyond.

Minister Thompson in a statement on the meeting outcome said: “The government has been very focused on revitalizing Grand Bahama, this will be accomplished by increasing trade and investment in Grand Bahama. These meetings allowed government and business leaders to address issues in their countries. I was able to speak to other government and business leaders about investing in Grand Bahama particularly in the technology industry.

The European Union Code of Conduct Group has officially recommended The Bahamas’ removal from the list of non-cooperative jurisdictions for tax purposes.

The government received confirmation of this in writing on April 17, 2018 from the Secretariat of the Code of Conduct Group.
