Minister of Transport and Local Government Frankie Campbell has announced that the Bahamas Maritime Authority will hold its first Bi-Annual Maritime Week, May 6-11.

During the week of activities, the public will be made aware of career opportunities in the maritime industry. The Minister made the announcement at the Ministry of Transport on Monday.

ALT TAG HEREProviding an update during the recent Caribbean Travel Marketplace in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Yasmine Mills-Strachan, director of sales for Comfort Suites Paradise Island, reported that the hotel fared especially well over the Christmas holidays and she continues to receive encouraging feedback from travel partners.

“We currently have attractive promotions in the marketplace and, as a result, have been able to consistently maintain solid ground,” she added.

Tia Forbes, director of revenue and informational technology, who also was in Puerto Rico for the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association‘s flagship event, noted that advanced bookings are encouraging.

CHTAThe Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) is inviting the region’s hospitality sector to submit nominations for the coveted Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF) Awards, to be presented in Miami this summer.

“The CHIEF Awards shine a spotlight on the four areas we consider critical to the resilience and healthy growth of the tourism and hospitality sectors, which are the bedrock of our region’s economies,” says CHTA president Karolin Troubetzkoy.

The awards honour the best practices in Environmental Sustainability, Operations, Sales and Marketing, and Social Responsibility.

Bahamasair, The Bahamas’ national flag carrier, has announced that, beginning May 3rd, they will begin non-stop service between Miami, Florida and Bimini.

The 30-minute flight between Miami and Bimini will use a 50-seater aircraft – the ATR 42.

A new survey from the Central Bank of The Bahamas, released this week, sheds light on how Bahamians bank – revealing that many are unhappy with current banking fees and charges.

While 60 per cent of those surveyed said they were “largely satisfied” with their experiences at their primary bank, most expressed unease about the level of fees associated with common services such as ATM use, check cashing and deposits.
