Government announces WTO consultation schedule

The government of The Bahamas has announced to the business community in Grand Bahama that it will be carrying out consultations May 16-18 to obtain private sector input as a part of its efforts to join the World Trade Organization.

The government of The Bahamas has announced to the business community in Grand Bahama that it will be carrying out consultations to obtain private sector input as a part of its efforts to join the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The consultations are intended to inform the government’s negotiating position in respect of various economic sectors. To that end, the input of the business community in this consultative process would be welcomed.

Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis officially opened the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit (PMDU) for Public Financial Management and Performance Monitoring Reform May 8, 2018 at the Office of the Prime Minister.

On hand were Cabinet Ministers, other government officials, representatives from Canada, which utilizes a similar concept, and representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank.

On April 13, The Central Bank of The Bahamas issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) inviting qualified credit bureau operators to submit proposals to apply for a license to establish and operate a credit bureau in The Bahamas.

Interested credit bureau operators had until April 27 to submit questions.

The Central Bank has now published its responses to questions about the RFP which it received from credit bureau operators.

May 25, 2018, the European Union (EU ) will implement its General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in all member states May 25, 2018.

While the new regulations will directly impact EU countries, implementation could also affect Bahamas-based organizations conducting business with entities falling under the regulations.

Sunryse Information Management, a data management firm based in Nassau, says local companies failing to comply with specific data collection guidelines as outlined in the GDPR regulations while engaging with EU companies could be subject to face stiff fines of up to €20 million or 4 per cent of their annual revenue.

The Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Legal Affairs and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) collaborated to host a two-day Anti-Money Laundering/Countering Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) Forensic Workshop, May 1-2, 2018.

The workshop was part of an ongoing process to build even greater capacity among the country’s regulators.

PwC was invited by the Office of the Attorney-General to facilitate the two-day workshop.
