Central Bank invites input on cryptocurrency regulation

The Central Bank of The Bahamas has issued a discussion paper on a proposed regulatory framework for crypto assets and related instruments. The consultative period will run until December 15, 2018.

To further modernize the financial services sector, the Central Bank has issued a discussion paper on a proposed regulatory framework for crypto assets and related instruments.

This will affect the Bank’s supervised financial institutions (SFIs).

The Bank seeks to enhance the sector’s competitiveness–without compromising the integrity or international reputation of The Bahamas, or undermining the financial safety of Bahamian households. These considerations are consistent with international best practices.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation (BMOTA) led by the Hon. Dionisio D’Aguilar along with leading industry executives from Atlantis Resorts, Baha Mar, The Pointe and Majestic Tours, took media outlets and tour operators in Beijing and Shanghai on a whirlwind tour of the Islands of The Bahamas, solidifying its message that ‘The Bahamas is a viable destination for Chinese tourists’.

Presenting on the future of education, Minister Lloyd is a major advocate for the advancement of technology in schools and believes that the advancement of technology in schools inevitable and is long overdue in The Bahamas.

Germaine Bullard has been employed with Holdun Family Office (Bahamas) Ltd for the past two years as a private client consultant with responsibilities such as client acquisition and a number of business strategies.

Bullard has also worked for Canadian financial institutions such as RBC in client acquisition and operation roles. He has extensive knowledge in financial planning and relationship management including customer services, with a keen interest in investment management.

As The Central Bank of The Bahamas moves ahead with plans to develop a digital Bahamian dollar, governor John Rolle says regulators must facilitate “the positive side of the Fintech revolution”.

Addressing attendees at the Caribbean Association of Banks 45th annual conference last week, Rolle said: “We are working to have a digital version of the local currency in circulation at some point. This will be a digital version, functioning in every way as the existing currency.”
