In celebration of Caribbean Tourism Month, Caribbean Tourism Organization is hosting two live events via its Facebook page November 19-20.

On November 19 at 11:00 am Eastern Caribbean Time (10:00 am Jamaica/New York, 3:00 pm London) there will be a live discussion with CTO secretary general Hugh Riley. Riley will be fielding questions from Facebook followers about the Caribbean’s tourism industry. You can email your questions in advance to jjohnrose@caribtourism.com or type in your question during the session. This is a one-hour session.

AM Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A- and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of “a-” of Family Guardian Insurance Co Ltd. Concurrently, the credit rating agency has affirmed the Long-Term ICR of “bbb-” of FamGuard Corp Ltd. Both are domiciled in Nassau, The Bahamas.

Best has affirmed the Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating (Long-Term ICR) of “a-” of Family Guardian Insurance Company Limited (Family Guardian). Concurrently, A.M. Best has affirmed the Long-Term ICR of “bbb-” of FamGuard Corporation Limited (FamGuard) (BISX: FAM) (both domiciled in Nassau, Bahamas). Family Guardian is a wholly owned subsidiary of its publicly traded parent, FamGuard. The outlook of these Credit Ratings (ratings) is stable.

The ratings reflect Family Guardian’s balance sheet strength, which A.M. Best categorizes as strong, as well as its strong operating performance, neutral business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management (ERM).

PM highlights BICA's economic contribution

Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis delivered the keynote address at the opening of The Bahamas Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA) Week 2018 under the theme ‘Effectively Transitioning in a Digital Environment: Staying Current on the Global Stage’ at Baha Mar Convention Centre November 12.

During his speech, the Prime Minister noted the long history of the profession, celebrating nearly 50 years.

“BICA members represent a significant movement in Bahamian entrepreneurship, moving from a profession that was predominantly represented by expatriates to a profession that is predominantly represented by Bahamians.”

“BICA has produced an impressive number of private business executives in The Bahamas, along with leaders in various public entities, including the Office of the Auditor General and the Public Treasury,” he said.

Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis is expected to be the keynote speaker at the opening of the Second Annual Grand Bahama Technology Summit, November 14-16, 2018 at the Grand Lucayan.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of a recent Blockchain and Crypto Currency Conference also held in Freeport, Prime Minister Minnis said: “Our government recognizes that in order for the economy to grow, we must diversify and create other opportunities for Bahamians to be successful.”

OECDThe Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest led a delegation to Brussels and Paris this week, for frank discussions with high ranking officials within the European Commission and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on The Bahamas’ compliance with international standards on tax governance.

Accompanying the Deputy Prime Minister was the Minister of Financial Services, Trade & Industry and Immigration Brent Symonette; the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Carl Bethel QC; and a senior advisor from each of their respective ministries.

PM: economy 'turning the corner'

The Bahamian economy is “turning the corner,” according to Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis.

He made the comment as he officially opened the Securities Commission of The Bahamas Public Companies Forum.

The one-day conclave was held under the theme: “Expanding the Role of the Capital Markets In Bahamian Economic Development,” November 8, 2018 at British Colonial Hilton.

The forum provided an opportunity to discuss some of the initiatives undertaken by the government to create an environment for entrepreneurs.

Cruise tourism income hits record levels

A new study has found that cruise tourism and the 29.6 million passenger and crew onshore visits throughout 36 Caribbean region and Latin American destinations directly generated a record $3.36 billion in total expenditures, with The Bahamas raking in $405.8 million, the most in the region.
