One of the visions of the government for Grand Bahama in 2018 was to help place the island on a path of economic recovery, and then move it towards financial growth, “that was the goal of this government in Grand Bahama and we believe that significant progress has taken place – although there remains much more work to be done,” said Minister of State for Grand Bahama Kwasi Thompson.

The Minister’s remarks came during a year in review by the Office of the Prime Minister in Grand Bahama to members of the local media December 16.

Minister of Tourism and Aviation Dionisio D’Aguilar led a delegation to the 11th session of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s negotiating event, ICAN 2018 where he attended negotiations on air services in Nairobi, Kenya, 10-14 December 2018.

The Bahamas conducted some 24 meetings over the five-day period, where Minister D’Aguilar signed 10 Air Services Agreements (ASAs) and seven Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) during the meeting.

Spike in airlift to bring boon to regional tourismThe Caribbean region’s private sector has a unique opportunity to generate strong profits in the new year with the unprecedented quantity of airlift coming into the region, according to the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA).

Director general and chief executive officer of the CHTA Frank Comito encouraged regional stakeholders to get ready for what the association believes can be an especially strong winter season.

“With new routes and upgraded aircraft announcements over recent months, market-savvy hoteliers are positioned to increase occupancy and generate additional business.”

IMF commends Bahamas on fiscal policy

The International Monetary Fund has commended the government for several key policy initiatives, including the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2018, and the strategic plan to create a Disaster Relief Fund. Read the Minister of Finance's response here.

This comes after a recent review of The Bahamas by the IMF.

In response, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest said: “The government will stay the course with its fiscal strategy to boost economic growth, strengthen the fiscal balance and increase transparency and government accountability.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest said five progressive pieces of legislation tabled in the House of Assembly recently, will establish new regulations to govern the financial services sector and bring it in line with international standards and domestic law as it relates to substance, equal tax treatment, ownership registration, reporting and fee requirements.

Those five pieces of legislation are: The Commercial Entities (Substance Requirements) Bill, 2018; The Removal of Preferential Exemptions Bill, 2018; The Register of Beneficial Ownership Bill, 2018; The Non-Profit Organizations Bill, 2018, and The Penal Code (Amendment) Bill, 2018.
