Experts, academics, engineers and innovators are set to gather in Miami this month to discuss the latest in blockchain technology and its role in the rapidly evolving fintech space.

The IOHK Summit, hosted by blockchain engineering firm IOHK, will bring together sector stakeholders for a two-day event examining cryptocurrencies, fintech legislation, social media, blockchain’s potential in the developing world and the future of finance.

Six months after it launched the first global trading platform for local residents, Cornèr Bank (Overseas) Ltd unveiled a slate of expanded investment services this week, including its trading app My Cornèr for use in The Bahamas.

Announcement of the expansion that included fund and individual asset management, advisory services and an app that allows 24/7 trading for Cornèrtrader account holders came from group chairman Vittorio Cornaro during the opening of Cornèr’s new art exhibition at its Old Fort Town Centre office.

sunNfunDionisio D’Aguilar, Minister of Tourism and Aviation, attended the 45th Annual Sun ’n Fun International Fly-In and Expo, taking place this week in Lakeland, Florida.

The largest convention in Florida and the second largest aviation conference in the United States, Sun ’n Fun attracts more than 200,000 pilots, aviation enthusiasts and media professionals from around the world and features some 500 vendors and over 10,000 airplanes, from homebuilt to war birds.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and Aviation (MOTA) has a joint marketing partnership with Sun ’n Fun International, to promote its destination, private aviation guidelines, benefits, seminars, and fly outs, all of which have proven beneficial for The Bahamas.

Caribbean ExportThe Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) is helping creative entrepreneurs across the region access new markets and increase their exposure internationally.

Caribbean Export, which recently hosted a creative and cultural industries workshop in Trinidad and Tobago attended by 70 creative professionals, wants to focus on the arts sector in 2019, helping small business owners and entrepreneurs in niche industries such as fashion, music, film and animation.

World Autism Day was recognized in Parliament Square in Nassau with blue lighting, a special ceremony and an address by Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis.

A number of Cabinet Ministers also participated in the annual event, hosted by autism organization Reach. ‘Light it up Blue’ ceremonies are part of a worldwide campaign to raise awareness of autism.

The Securities Commission of The Bahamas (SCB) has released draft legislation that would regulate the issuance or sale of digital tokens in or from within The Bahamas, and how sellers and intermediary service providers conduct themselves.

The SCB released the draft Digital Assets and Registered Exchanges Bill, 2019 (“DARE Bill, 2019”) for industry and public consultation for a period of eight weeks.

Indications are that the domestic economy sustained its upward trajectory during February, according to The Central Bank of The Bahamas‘s latest monthly report.

The country saw an increase in long-stay visitor arrivals, underpinning the improvement in tourism sector output, while foreign investment-led projects supported activity in the construction sector.

Reflecting the hike in the value added tax (VAT) rate and higher oil prices, the inflation rate rose modestly in 2018.

Philanthropists, investors and educational stakeholders celebrated today in Nassau as the Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) broke ground on its new campus.

The new upper school campus will house 250 students in Grades 6 to 12, allowing preschool to Grade 5 pupils sole use of the current facilities.

Today’s groundbreaking follows extensive work on the current school site, including construction of the 5,200 sq ft Dingman Hall and newly-renovated Early Learning classrooms.
