One EleutheraOne of The Bahamas’ most beautiful and popular islands, Eleuthera, is also proving to be one of its most innovative–leading the way in small island development through non-profit organization (NPO) One Eleuthera.

One Eleuthera is tasked with ensuring any development on the island is sustainable, “in scale with nature” and of benefit to the local community. The foundation is looking to invest in projects that meet these standards and is focusing its efforts in five areas—education, heritage and culture, economic development, environmental sustainability and health and wellness.

Officially launched in April 2012, One Eleuthera has already approved a range of projects, from the establishment of a new arts and cultural centre to the creation of a heritage trail that winds down the length of the island.

Emera IncNova Scotia’s Emera Inc. is projecting 2013 to be a turnaround year for one of its Caribbean investments.

The prediction was found in a prospectus for a new offering of preferred shares by Grand Bahama Power Co., a subsidiary of the Halifax energy conglomerate.

Grand Bahama Power expects to have a 42.1 per cent jump in profitablity this year, but Sasha Irving, Emera’s director of corporate communications, points out that the improved profit projection comes after a couple of years of losses for the Caribbean utility.

Available indicators of domestic economic activity continue to suggest a modest growth momentum, concentrated in tourism and construction-related foreign investment projects. With limited spillover benefits to other areas of the economy, employment conditions stayed weak and private sector demand has dampened by the persistence of high loan arrears. In price developments, domestic energy costs contracted in November. The monetary outcome featured a contraction in both banking sector liquidity and external reserves, reflecting the seasonal increase in foreign currency demand.

Minister for Grand Bahama Michael Darville met December 17 with top management from several major companies on Grand Bahama, including Pharmachem, Club Fortuna, Polymers International, Bahama Rock, and Freeport Container Port.

Minister Darville used the occasion to gain information on the companies growth and development, employment opportunities, and current challenges.

Relocation Division

Mario Carey Realty (MCR) has created a relocation division, naming the husband and wife team of Lamond and Robyn Davis to work with individuals and families who are moving anywhere from five blocks to 5,000 miles away.

“There is probably no segment of the real estate industry that is more personal or emotional than relocation,” says founder Mario Carey.

“The fact is that re-settling can be very unsettling,” Carey continues. “So we are very fortunate to have identified the team of Lamond and Robyn Davis who understand what it takes to make relocation a rewarding experience, so clients look at relocation not as the end of an old chapter, but the beginning of a new, exciting time in their lives.”
