wiki fishing caribThe Caribbean island of St Vincent and the Grenadines, home to the Eastern Caribbean Office of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM), is hosting fisheries industry experts from around the region this week.

The regional professionals are meeting for the ACP Fish II/CRFM regional technical consultation titled Strengthening the Capacity of CRFM and its Member States for Information and Knowledge Sharing on Sustainable Management of Fisheries in the Caribbean Region, January 28-29 at the Sunset Shore Beach Hotel in Kingstown.

Representatives from Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago are expected to attend.

Claudio Bisogneiro presented Letters of Credence to Dame Marguerite Pindling, Deputy to the Governor-General, accrediting him Ambassador of Italy to The Bahamas, at a ceremony held in the Drawing Room at Government House January 24, 2013.

Dame Marguerite acknowledged the diplomatic relations between both countries and the shared concerns regarding preserving the environment in the face of global warming and other concerns.

She said The Bahamas looks forward to the continued cooperation with Italy particularly in the areas of tourism, culture, renewable energy and climate change.

She acknowledged that The Bahamas welcomes the ambassador’s offer to share knowledge for effective preparedness and response to the increasing intensity and frequency of natural disasters and is open to dialogue on the promotion of food security for all nations.clearclearclear

Local and international arbitration experts will be part of a featured panel at the upcoming International Business and Finance Summit (IBFS) that is being hosted by the Bahamas Financial Services Board (BFSB) in Bimini in early February.

Simone Morgan-Gomez, Partner in the law firm of Callenders & Co., will moderate the session which will focus on “Why The Bahamas”, with panelists taking the opportunity to speak to developments locally; next steps in positioning this jurisdiction as a seat for arbitration and an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre; the important international instruments on arbitration Law; international versus domestic arbitration; and what the approach should be vis a vis regional competitors.

Celebrities spearheading the Ministry of Tourism’s multi-million dollar advertising campaign have been filmed on location on various Bahamian islands to help showcase the best the archipelago has to offer. Ads featuring actress and model Shakara Ledard and former NBA star Rick Fox will be shown in the US as early as next month’s Super Bowl.

“Positive signs” in real estate market

Chief executive officer of Bahamas Realty Larry Roberts says he is optimistic about the real estate market in The Bahamas, as sales of second homes start to pick up, echoing mild recovery in the US housing market.

The Bahamian real estate market has been improving slowly but steadily since the financial downturn in 2008, and there are “positive signs” that the coming year will see some growth, according to realtor Larry Roberts.

“Because of the number of foreclosures in the US and persons taking advantage of that, the US market has been moving quite well,” he said. “Historically, we lag behind the US by about six to nine months, so when it changes there, we start to feel the positive signs.
