A high level delegation from the Bahamas government met with senior executives of Buckeye Partners, which owns the BORCO oil storage and refining facility in Grand Bahama, yesterday to discuss safety protocols in light of several recent spills.

Prime Minister Perry Christie, Minister of Transport and Aviation Glenys Hanna Martin, and Minister of the Environment and Housing Kenred Dorsett attended the meeting.

Zachary BonczekBahamas Real Estate Association (BREA) licensing instructor Zachary Bonczek (pictured) has been named director of sales & marketing of the $200-million residential development Palm Cay in Nassau.

Bonczek’s appointment, effective January 1, was announced last week as a part of the roll-out of a new local executive and operations team that includes marina consultant Brooks Russell, Administrator and Property Owners Association director Iona Henderson, as well as a host of local firms providing professional services.

“Our goal in Palm Cay is not just to build homes or neighbourhoods, but to create a community and we believe that with Zach Bonczek at the welcome gate and Brooks Russell at the marina helm, we are building the kind of community that nurtures friendships and brings back that sense of being part of something good,” said the Palm Cay Development.

Minister of Financial Services with responsibility for trade and industry Ryan Pinder recently participated in the Caribbean Exporters’ Colloquium organized by the Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA).

Addressing government officials and industry leaders in the region, Minister Pinder called for regional economic integration.

“In order for our people in the region to benefit and appreciate regional integration, we must be successful at economic regional integration. Without the creation of opportunities for our people on an economic basis, meaning employment, the chance to build careers, entrepreneurial opportunities, and business expansions, regional integration cannot succeed.”

The government of The Bahamas is now moving in the right direction as it relates to Grand Bahama, said Minister for Grand Bahama Michael Darville during an address at the Career Tech Exhibition 2013 March 21.

The exhibition was sponsored by the Grand Bahama Campus of the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI).

“As a trained engineer who understands the complexities of industry and the importance of technical training, I am certainly grateful for this opportunity to share my ministry’s plans moving forward,” Darville said.

He said that this administration’s vision for Grand Bahama revolves around facilitating economic growth and opportunities for all residents.

AbacoPrime Minister Perry Christie has said that Abaco continues to lead the way in the Family Islands as a thriving second-home location for international investors and Bahamians, providing construction, employment and business opportunities.

“This is an important element of the country’s year-round tourism product in Abaco, as well as in other parts of the country,” the Prime Minister said during his contribution to the 2012/2013 Mid-year Budget Statement in the House of Assembly March 18.

“Undoubtedly one of the finest luxury residential, golf and marina resorts in the entire Caribbean is Discovery Land Company’s Baker’s Bay Golf and Ocean Club, an anchor project, which I had the opportunity of approving during my first term in office.”

AtlantisDuring the 2012/2013 Mid-year Budget Statement in the House of Assembly March 18, Prime Minister Perry Christie underscored the continued contribution made by Atlantis Paradise Island to the Bahamian economy.

He said the economic impact was far-reaching, employing 8,187 people directly, whilst also providing jobs and income in construction, retail, transportation, and wide range of goods and services.

“When factoring in the additional jobs being created by suppliers, service providers and contractors, Atlantis is responsible for the creation of a total of at least 16,000 direct and indirect jobs.”

The Prime Minister said Atlantis’ continued commitment to capital improvements and projects has resulted in a steady stream of construction related jobs and compensation.

Key services within the Registrar General’s department will be available online as early as June this year, according to Attorney General Allyson Maynard-Gibson, who told attendees at the e-Government & Business Forum yesterday that users of the government portal will soon be able to navigate the various stages of incorporating a company entirely online.
