The Bahamas partners with EU for new Fisheries Act

In the framework of the ACP Fish Program II, funded by the European Union, the Department of Marine Resources of The Bahamas will work on the development of a new Fisheries Act. Town meetings are being held throughout The Bahamas to get the public's input on the matter.

In the framework of the ACP Fish Program II, funded by the European Union , the Department of Marine Resources of The Bahamas will work on the development of a New Fisheries Act.

A first step in this process is to organize a series of town meeting throughout The Bahamas to get the public’s input on the matter. The series of community meetings began in the capital on May 22 and will continue until the end of the current month.

On the second leg of its national tour, the national flag commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Independence landed on Deadman’s Cay, Long Island, June 11.

The flag was transported by the air division of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

The flag was hoisted on the grounds of Deadman’s Cay airport.

The flag hoisted there was the same flag that replaced the Union Jack on July 10, 1973 at Clifford Park.

Chester Fox, deputy councillor and Sharon Cartwright, South Town chairperson brought brief remarks and the crowd was entertained by the Mangrove Bush Primary School May Pole Dancers.

The Ministry of Finance has confirmed the appointment of Sharmie Farrington-Austin as the new Data Protection Commissioner of The Bahamas.

The attorney-at-Law, with 23 years experience in legal, regulatory, administrative and human resources issues, is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the provisions of the Data Protection (Privacy of Information) Act, which provides The Bahamas with the necessary data protection legislation that is recognized by the international community.

The duties of the new Data Commissioner will also include investigation of any contraventions of the legislation, and the provision of information to the public about the legislation.

ALT TAG HERENASSAU, Bahamas, June 10, 2013 (GLOBENEWSWIRE) — Ultrapetrol (Bahamas) Limited (Nasdaq:ULTR), an industrial transportation company serving marine transportation needs in three markets (River Business, Offshore Supply Business and Ocean Business), announced today the closing of its previously announced sale of $200 million in aggregate principal amount of its 8.875% First Preferred Ship Mortgage Notes due 2021 (the “Notes”). The Notes and related guarantees are secured by the stock of certain of the Company’s subsidiaries and by first preferred mortgages on vessels owned by certain of its subsidiaries. The Notes were issued at par and sold in a private offering within the United States to qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the “Securities Act”), and to certain other persons outside of the United States in reliance on Regulation S under the Securities Act. The Company received gross proceeds of $200 million from the offering.

The report was presented during the company’s annual general meeting (AGM) June 4 at the British Colonial Hilton, Nassau.
