The Ministry of Tourism is hosting a Small Island Developing States (SIDS) conference in Nassau February 19-20, 2014, at the Melia Nassau Beach Resort, Cable Beach.

The two-day conference will be held in conjunction with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) under the theme: “Tourism as a Key Sector for Development in Island States.”

Investment fund managers in The Bahamas were briefed Monday on the intricacies of a European Union (EU) directive that could seriously affect the growth of the assets management industry.

The Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) bans unregulated attempts to raise funds for investments, or market offshore funds in EU member countries.

Bahamas police band performs at Heat gameFort Lauderdale, Fl – The Royal Bahamas Police Force marching band performed during the halftime interval at a Miami Heat game in the American Airlines Arena, January 23.

The band’s performance was a part of a Bahamas night at the Heat vs LA Lakers game.

The marketing initiative was a part of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism’s Sports Department contractual agreement with the Heat organization aimed at exposing The Bahamas tourism product to thousands of sports fans.

Minister of Sports Dr Daniel Johnson, who was in Florida for the performance, predicted a “breakout year” in sports tourism for The Bahamas.

Dr Johnson pointed out that several large-scale sporting events will be held in The Bahamas this year. January marked the start of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour at Paradise Island, when Jessica Korda won the second annual Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic.
