A basketball team made up of Atlantis employees recently took part in The Bahamas Basketball Federation’s (BBF) Summer of Thunder event, which provided the opportunity for local basketball coaches and athletes to compete against teams from US Colleges, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

Action on the courtA basketball team made up of Atlantis employees recently took part in The Bahamas Basketball Federation’s (BBF) Summer of Thunder event, which provided the opportunity for local basketball coaches and athletes to compete against teams from US colleges, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

“The teams that our players were up against can be considered seasoned professionals who spend hours a day practicing and playing. The players on our Atlantis team work all day and have limited time to practice,” says director of employee programmes at Atlantis Camille Fields.

“Given this scenario, we could not be more proud of those individuals who stepped up, deep into their off-season, to participate in this great local event.”clear

Ministry of Finance clarifies treatment of VAT on pre-existing contracts

The government has released a Guidance Note on Transitional Arrangements reviewing transitional provisions contained in value added tax legislation.

The Guidance Note on Transitional Arrangements that was issued on September 6, 2014 provides a summary review of a number of transitional provisions that are contained in the VAT legislation.

One of these relates to the VAT treatment of contracts that are concluded prior to the entry into force of the VAT Act, which include the provision of taxable supplies to be made after the entry into force of the act and which do not provide for the imposition of VAT.

Prime Minister Perry Christie has said that he applauds the entrepreneurship of Bahamian businessman Thomas Basden, who is opening a small resort on Rose Island.

The Prime Minister recently led a delegation of Cabinet Ministers and several officials to visit Basden’s Camp Grantanna–a $10 million high-level special projects resort on three acres that will cater to groups.

Family Island OutlookTCL Events will be hosting the popular Business Outlook one-day conferences in Abaco, September 24, and Exuma, October 22.

Under the theme Charting the Course for Growth in Abaco, the 11th Annual Abaco Business Outlook has been scheduled for September 24 at the Great Abaco Beach Resort, Marsh Harbour, where Michael Halkitis, Minister of State for Finance, will deliver the keynote address.

Details of the Exuma event are yet to be announced.

Florida Panthers LogoThe Florida Panthers were in Nassau last week to participate in a youth hockey clinic and community outreach programme from September 4-6, 2014.

Erik GudbransonWhile in Nassau, staff of the Florida Panthers as well as its mascot, defenseman, Erik Gudbranson (pictured), and broadcasters Randy Moller and Bill Linday visited sick children in the Children’s Ward at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

A youth clinic, opened to children ages seven to 15 years was also planned.

The visit by the Florida Panthers is a joint partnership with the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism (MOT) and JetBlue, the official airline partner for the Florida Panthers of BB&T Center.

Courtney PierceTwo Callenders law firm partners will head to Shanghai next month for a major offshore financial conference on wealth and asset management expected to attract some 500 advisors and professionals serving China’s fast-growing population of high net worth individuals (HNWIs).

Senior attorneys, trust and asset recovery specialist Courtney Pearce and aviation and development specialist Llewellyn Boyer-Cartwright, will attend the China Offshore Summit where The Bahamas is set to figure prominently.
