Director general of tourism Joy Jibrilu officially welcomed participants in the Third LPGA Pure Silk Bahamas Classic at the start of the women’s golf tournament on Paradise Island Monday.

The week-long event will culminate with a closing ceremony and trophy presentation on Sunday.

As The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation (BCCEC) celebrates 80 years of private sector representation, chairman Gowon Bowe has spoken of the need for greater and more productive partnerships – between the private sector and government, as well as between individual chambers around the country.

“The Chamber has a very integral role to play in securing the future of The Bahamas,” the chairman said last week in an address during the 24th annual Bahamas Business Outlook. “It is important to establish the right relationships. The private sector must partner with the government to achieve any economic success in this country. We have to collaborate on national issues to build trust and consensus.”

Christina Rolle Stephen Wells

The Securities Commission of the Bahamas has appointed Christina Rolle as executive director, effective January 26, 2015, and Stephen Wells as deputy executive director, effective January 2, 2015.

The commission’s chairman, Tonya Bastian Galanis, welcomed the new executive team.

“After an extensive recruitment process, we are pleased to announce the selection of such experienced and talented persons who will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Commission,” said Bastian Galanis.

Rolle replaces outgoing executive director Hillary Deveaux.

Tax, captives highlighted on IBFS agenda

Under the primary theme of Creating the New Legacy, this year’s International Business & Finance Summit will draw on expert insight from international speakers on topics such as tax information exchange and the captive insurance market. Hope Strachan, Minister of Financial Services, Trade and Industry arrived in Costa Rica January 24, 2014 in preparation for the convening of the Third Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Community of American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

Prime Minister Perry Christie will head the Bahamian delegation scheduled to arrive January 28, and will attend the summit in his capacity as chair of CARICOM and as CARICOM’S Representative on the CELAC Quartet.
