The Bahamas Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA) has held its 2016 Annual General Meeting.

BICA President Darnell Osborne said, “BICA must remain at the forefront through strong and decisive leadership and collaboration with the government, regulators and other key stakeholders. We must not only embrace change, but champion it. BICA must continue to be a united body with a strong commitment to a common objective.”

At the Commonwealth Bank's annual general meeting held this week, chairman William Sands Jr said that the bank earned more than $50 million in profits, and in 2015 hit new highs in assets, share price and community donations.

At the Commonwealth Bank‘s annual general meeting held this week, chairman William Sands Jr said that the bank earned more than $50 million in profits, and in 2015 hit new highs in assets, share price and community donations.

“2015 was a record year for the bank and represented the fourth time in the bank’s history that profits exceeded $50 million,” said Sands. “That speaks to the quality of the management of your bank.”

The Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce (GBCC) is establishing a new venture capital fund with the aim of supporting the island’s fledging entrepreneurs.

“We want to create opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs,” said GBCC president Kevin Seymour, who explained that the fund is being created by the Chamber’s Small Business and Economic Development Committee and hopes to connect with its first applicants before the end of the year.

The meeting was a continuation of business talks between the two parties stemming from the GB Chamber of Commerce and Grand Bahama Port Authority’s trade mission to Houston, Texas in May.

Increased airlift and a renewed focus on the US market will help Grand Bahama recover from a downturn in its Canadian visitor arrivals, according to Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board (GBITB) chairman Russell Miller.

In the first quarter of 2016, air arrivals to Grand Bahama declined by 30 per cent from the previous year, said Miller who attributed the falling numbers to the recent devaluation of the Canadian dollar.

The Bahamas International Securities Exchange has announced that voting participation interests in the Star Capital Fund ICON have successfully completed the BISX listing process. As a result, these securities have now been added to the roster of funds listed on the Exchange.

BISXThe Bahamas International Securities Exchange (BISX) has announced that voting participation interests in the Star Capital Fund ICON (Star Capital) have successfully completed the BISX listing process. As a result, these securities have now been added to the roster of funds listed on the Exchange. Star Capital is open-ended investment fund.

Star Capital is established as an Investment Condominium under the Investment Condominium Act, 2014 and is registered as a Smart Fund 007 under the Investment Funds Act, 2003. Star Capital becomes the first Investment Condominium (ICON) listed on The Bahamas International Securities Exchange.

The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association [recently] elected a new slate of Caribbean tourism officials at its Annual General Meeting held at the Hyatt Regency Miami.

The five vice presidents elected to serve for the 2016-2018 biennium include: Stuart Bowe, president of the Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association and senior vice president and general manager of Coral Towers at Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas; Karen Whitt, director of the Turks & Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association and general manager, Regent Palms Turks & Caicos; Patricia Affonso Dass, immediate past chairman of the Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association and general manager of Ocean Two Resort & Residences, Barbados; Wayne Cummings, director of business processes and administration of Sandals Resorts International; and Pablo Torres, general manager of Caribe Hilton San Juan.

The announcements were made on the sidelines of the CHTA’s annual Taste of the Caribbean culinary competition and festival.
