Gov to spend £200m on health system

The government of The Bahamas is poised to invest almost $200 million in the infrastructural expansion and improvement of the country’s hospitals beginning later this month.

The government of The Bahamas is poised to invest almost $200 million in the infrastructural expansion and improvement of the country’s hospitals beginning later this month.

The expansion process is expected to take place over a two-year period and will include an $18 million investment in an Electronic Medical Records System; a $17 million investment in upgrades and expansions to the Maternity Ward at the Princess Margaret Hospital that will almost triple the space currently in use by Maternity Ward and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

STCAtlantis Paradise Island is sponsoring a turtle being used in migrations research programme as part of its continued support of marine conservation efforts through the Blue Project.

Shark TourismSeptember 2016 (PewTrusts.org) – The government of the Dominican Republic recently hosted Latin American and Caribbean nations at a regional workshop in Santo Domingo to discuss proposals to protect 13 species of sharks and rays that will soon be considered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

At the meeting held Aug. 11-12, representatives of 16 nations talked about the need for global shark protections and the benefits of listing the shark and ray species on CITES Appendix II at the convention’s upcoming Conference of the Parties (CoP) in Johannesburg in late September.

The nations spanned the region and brought diverse perspectives on the marine environment. Attendees included Argentina, The Bahamas, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela.

Commonwealth Bank net profit up 11.8 per cent

Commonwealth Bank has reported an 11.8 per cent increase in net profits from $29.2 million for the six months ending June 30, 2015 to $32.7 million for the same time period this year, crediting tight management of its loan portfolio and an improvement in net interest income.

Commonwealth Bank has reported an 11.8 per cent increase in net profits from $29.2 million for the six months ending June 30, 2015 to $32.7 million for the same time period this year, crediting tight management of its loan portfolio and an improvement in net interest income.

The results, according to chairman William B Sands Jr, are welcome news for the all-Bahamian bank’s 6,000+ shareholders and reflects a long-established pattern of conservative lending practices and tight quality control of accounts.

Central Bank releases monthly economic report

The Central Bank of The Bahamas has released its Monthly Economic and Financial Developments for July 2016. Indications are that domestic economic conditions remained mildly positive over the review period, characterised by continued foreign investment-led construction activity, while the impulses from the tourism sector were modest. Indications are that domestic economic conditions remained mildly positive over the review period, characterised by continued foreign investment-led construction activity, while the impulses from the tourism sector were modest. In prices developments, the inflation rate narrowed during the 12 months to June, reflecting the sustained impact of low global oil prices.

Meanwhile, liquidity in the banking system firmed, buoyed by the Government’s financing activities, while the lowered import pressures, also from abated fuel prices, contributed to a modest gain in external reserves.

CARPHA_logoNASSAU, Bahamas, September 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism together with the Ministry of Health and the Department of Environmental Health Services will hold a special Zika sensitivity meeting with industry stakeholders on Monday, September 5th at 10am at the British Colonial Hilton.

Invitations will be sent to industry partners. The objectives of the meeting are to further educate tourism stakeholders on the Zika virus and to encourage stakeholders to take preventive measures to mitigate the spread of Zika.

Ultrapetrol (Bahamas) Limited (ULTR) was among the biggest gainers on the Russell 2000 for Wednesday August 31 as the stock popped 6.34% to $0.35, representing a gain of $0.021 per share. Some 90,564 shares traded hands on 210 trades, compared with an average daily volume of 566,412 shares out of a total float of 140.73 million. The stock opened at $0.34 and traded with an intraday range of $0.37 to $0.33.
