The Minister of Financial Services Hope Strachan has issued the following statement in response to publications by The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

“The Bahamas remains committed to the transparency of its corporate registry. The data required by law to be maintained in the corporate registry is available to the public. The Bahamas is committed to the Registrar General’s Department transitioning to an entirely online service that meets international standards. This transition commenced in 2016 with the advent of the online companies registry.”

NASSAU Bahamas, September 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — For the second consecutive year, The Bahamas was named the ‘Caribbean’s Leading Luxury Destination’ by the World Travel Awards at a lavish gala in Jamaica on Saturday night.

The Bahamas beat out Anguilla, Turks and Caicos Islands, Mustique and St. Lucia, to win the prestigious award.

Nassau ConferenceBuilding on the foundation set by previous events, the eleventh Nassau Conference is scheduled for September 21, 2016 at the Meliá Nassau Beach Resort under the theme Strengthening Our Competitiveness.

New this year, The Nassau Conference extends its footprint to a second day, with a Financial Services Bootcamp scheduled for September 20, 2016 also at the Meliá.

Minister of Financial Services Hope Strachan will once again deliver opening remarks at the conference and provide attendees with a policy perspective on recent global and local industry and regulatory developments.

The Caribbean region saw 28.7 million visitors in 2015, an increase of 7 per cent over 2014 and a record in terms of number of arrivals to the region, according to the outgoing chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization. At present, 2016 is pacing ahead of 2015 and for the first time the region is likely to see 30 million visitors.

CTO elects Wilchcombe as chair

Bahamas Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe has been elected chair of the Caribbean Tourism Organizatio. The election took place last week in Barbados at the organization’s annual general meeting during the CTO’s State of the Tourism Industry Conference. NASSAU, Bahamas, September 19, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe was elected as the new chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) at the State of the Industry Conference (SOTIC) in Barbados on Thursday, September 15.

Minister Wilchcombe, who will serve his second non-consecutive two-year term, replaces Barbados Tourism Minister Richard Sealy.
