PUERTO RICO October 2016 – Bahamian hotelier Stuart Bowe was named the 2016 Caribbean Hotelier of the Year by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) .

Bowe, the senior vice president and general manager, Resort Operations of Atlantis Paradise Island, received the coveted honour at the Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF), hosted by CHTA, in Fajardo, Puerto Rico on Sunday.

Junkanoo Carnival boosts economy – photos

The Bahamas National Festival Commission chairman Paul Major said tourist arrivals for the weekends of the Grand Bahama carnival and Nassau carnival were up over last year, with an estimated 56 per cent increase in tourism related economic activity.

Central Bank launches new $10 note

The Central Bank of The Bahamas has launched a new note with a specially designed security thread, a world first. The new $10 note portrays Sir Stafford Sands, a former finance minister who helped create the tourism industry, and on the back of the note is the lighthouse at Hope Town, Abaco. The new security thread also appears on the back.

28 September 2016 (De La Rue) – De La Rue congratulates The Central Bank of The Bahamas on the occasion of the launch of the new $10 banknote, the world’s first circulating note with its Active™ security thread.

The new $10, launched today, has been designed and printed by De La Rue in close collaboration with the Central Bank. Using concept designs provided by the Bank, this note is a world first for a fully circulating banknote with De La Rue’s Active™ security thread and the first of a new family of banknotes that will be introduced over the next few years.

Construction resumes at Baha Mar

Prime Minister Perry Christie has indicated that construction has restarted at the stalled Baha Mar megaresort on Cable Beach.

Signs of life are emerging at the chronically stalled $3.5 billion Baha Mar mega-resort. Construction on the property re-started this week, said Perry Christie, the Bahamas prime minister.

Meanwhile, ex-employees of the insolvent development reportedly received payments this week.

In an update posted on the government website Monday, Christie said “every effort is being made to ensure” the resort’s casino, casino hotel, convention center and adjacent hotel and golf course will open “before the end of the coming winter season.” Negotiations between the as-yet unnamed buyer for the resort and Export-Import Bank of China (EXIM Bank) continue, he said.

A few of the players danced to the Junkanoo music as they disembarked the aircraft at Odyssey Monday evening.
