Central Bank: Economy falters due to hurricane

Despite signs of stability during the month of September, the passage of hurricane Matthew in the first week of October caused significant disruption in economic activity in The Bahamas’ two major economic centres, New Providence and Grand Bahama, according to The Central Bank of Bahamas' latest economic report.

Hurricane Matthew

November 2016 (ECLAC) – In the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, a team of experts in damage and loss assessment from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) subregional headquarters for the Caribbean flew to The Bahamas to assess the damages caused on the ground.

The mission, which took place from 23-29 October 2016, was funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and was undertaken in collaboration with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO).

The ECLAC team and their counterparts visited the areas of Andros, Berry Islands, Grand Bahama and New Providence, where they met stakeholders from the public and private sector to gauge the effects and impacts of the hurricane.

IADB IDB logoSANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – More than 400 representatives of non-governmental organizations from throughout Latin America and the Caribbean on Nov. 8 initiated a two-day debate on the best way to achieve sustainable growth in the region, to improve the lives of current and future generations.

For the XVI Annual Meeting between the Inter-American Development Bank Group (IDB) and Civil Society, the participants set out to come up with new solutions for challenge to growth, by tapping new technologies, pursuing innovative policies, and finding ways to make the region’s tax system fairer and more efficient so that more resources will be available to finance vital development programs.

Mr. Speaker,

In my Communication to Parliament last week, I introduced the Grand Bahama (Port Area) Investment Incentives (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the context of measures and incentives for the recovery of Grand Bahama economy following the massive devastation of Hurricane Matthew.

In that Communication, I also pointed out that “in order to bring about early and sustained economic recovery that will benefit the people of Grand Bahama in this current emergency, we must do whatever we can to protect and create businesses and jobs”. The amendments being proposed to Section 14, Section 15 and the Schedule to the Principal Act are directly related to achieving that objective.
