ALT TAG HEREBOSTON (SFCN) – The recent Trade Show/Dinner Presentation/Cultural Extravaganza by The Islands of The Bahamas in the cities of Burlington and Quincy, MA, drew crowds of travel agents despite chilly temperatures. Temperatures in Boston recently dipped to the low teens as the area experienced a chilly spell at the very onset of the Spring Season.

The low temperatures did not daunt travel agents who showed up in good numbers at the recent Bahamas events and raved about the fun and excitement as they left the venues to return to the Boston chill outside.

Trade Information Service PortalThe government of The Bahamas is set to officially launch the Bahamas Trade Information Service Portal today.

The objective of the portal is to diversify the economy through trade initiatives and to address the need for reliable, current and readily available trade information.

The new electronic gateway will be launched at the British Colonial Hilton April 6, 2017. Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Perry Christie is scheduled to deliver the keynote address.

The portal, which is a public-private partnership with the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation, will serve as an online platform for buyers, sellers and businesses through which to communicate, as well as conduct the operations of their business.

The board of directors of Sunshine Insurance (Agents & Brokers) Ltd, has approved the appointment of Paul McWeeney as president of the company.

His role commenced 3 April, 2017.

The superintendent of Insurance has confirmed that the appointment is acceptable to the Insurance Commission.

Baha Mar granted gaming licence

Obie Wilchcombe, Minister of Tourism with responsibility for gaming, has confirmed that the government has approved a gaming licence for the Baha Mar casino and will work with the resort to ensure that the prevailing pre-opening requirements are met before its soft opening April 21, 2017. When the Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) officially took over the reins of the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) in 2007, it marked the start of a $400 million investment programme that would completely overhaul the country’s main airport.

The management contract for all the airport’s commercial enterprises introduced a new paradigm of airport operations in the nation. Its portfolio included the full management of all terminal buildings, parking facilities and runways.

ALT TAG HEREThe Bahamas is enjoying a resurgence in tourism, government officials reported over the weekend at the official opening of Warwick Resort, Paradise Island’s first all-inclusive, adults-only hotel.

The resort had a soft opening late last year following a change in ownership and a $40-million renovation. Since then, numerous guests have enjoyed its 10,000-sq ft harbor terrace, 240 rooms, three suites, four restaurants and lounge.

Warwick Hotels and Resorts chain, founded by Richard Chiu in 1980, consists of 53 hotels with 9,000 rooms. The figure includes owned, managed and affiliate member hotels and resorts on five continents.

Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Perry Christie announced in the House of Assembly, March 29, 2017, that the government has approved the relaxation of certain Exchange Control measures to provide access by certain categories of Bahamian-owned businesses to investment financing in foreign currency.

“The government has also agreed to allow international banks present in our jurisdiction to have more flexibility in providing financing for residential real-estate investments for non-Bahamians,” Prime Minister Christie said.

Matthew clouds Quarterly Report

The passage of Hurricane Matthew in October dominated domestic developments in the last quarter of 2016. The aftermath of the storm disrupted tourism output and stalled fiscal consolidation efforts but the subsequent rebuilding activity, along with the re-start of several varied-scale foreign investment projects, provided positive stimulus to the construction sector and employment figures.
