Minnis sworn in

Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas Dr Hubert Minnis was sworn in May 11, 2017, saying that the election result represented “a new day” for country.

“Today also represents a renewal and reaffirmation of our democratic heritage,” he said, during his Swearing-In Ceremony at Government House. “Exercising a cherished right that is still not universal, the Bahamian people freely elected a new government.”

“We will honour this mandate for change.”

Prime Minister Minnis thanked Governor General Dame Marguerite Pindling for “most graciously” appointing him as the fourth Prime Minister of an independent Bahamas.

FMNBahamians voted overwhelmingly for change yesterday as opposition party the Free National Movement (FNM) swept aside the ruling Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) at the polls, making FNM leader Dr Hubert Minnis the country’s next Prime Minister.

The results of the General Election trickled in late last night and showed a decisive win for the FNM, which is expected to take 34 of The Bahamas’ 39 constituencies when the official tally is announced. Addressing the crowd at a victory rally in Nassau last night Prime Minister-elect Minnis said: “This was a long fought battle but the victory is not mine, the victory is yours. This is the people’s time and I am your servant.

Election campaign season draws to a close today, as Bahamians head to the polls to choose the country’s next government.

The ruling Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), which took power in 2012 under the leadership of Prime Minister Perry Christie, is hoping to see off challenges from the two major opposition parties – the Free National Movement (FNM) and the Democratic National Alliance (DNA).
