IWESNASSAU, Bahamas, May 2017 (Tourism Today) – Fifty-six businesswomen from across the United States and the Caribbean sailed to Nassau to attend a forum on emerging practices for female entrepreneurs.

The forum, entitled “These Women Mean Business Trade Exploration”, was hosted by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and gave Bahamian professionals the opportunity to network with and learn from international professionals.

The past 12 months has seen The Bahamas review its existing legislative framework for investment funds, with a view to ensuring that it maintains its competitiveness. Under the existing framework, some of the innovations that The Bahamas has introduced, such as the ICON legal structure and the SMART Fund series, have raised the jurisdiction’s profile and helped attract new business. However, it is time for a refresh of the 2003 Investment Funds Act which provided for these innovative instruments which support private wealth management.

New Minister takes up office

Minister of State for Grand Bahama Kwasi Thompson arrived on the island earlier in the week to take up office.

Minister Thompson spoke briefly with the media before going directly to the Ministry.

He said: “To be appointed the Minister of State responsible for Grand Bahama really is an awesome, awesome privilege, I see it really as service to the country.

“We have a lot of work to do. There’s not a lot of time to celebrate. There’s not a lot of time to get into the pomp and pageantry of it, but it is time to get to work.”

The inaugural meeting of the Cabinet was held yesterday at the Cecil Wallace Whitfield Centre. All Cabinet Ministers were present, except Desmond Bannister, Minister of Works, who is out of the country.

The Cabinet established under Article 72 of the Constitution of The Bahamas, is a collegiate body with collective decision-making and collective responsibility. It decided that all Ministers would conduct an audit within his Ministry (including departments and agencies funded by the public purse) of persons hired on contract, their job title/position, salary and period of contract.

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has said he is looking forward to an early briefing with new Prime Minister of The Bahamas Dr Hubert Minnis on matters relating to the Caribbean Community and the tourism industry.

“I look forward, Prime Minister, to the fresh ideas that you will undoubtedly bring to assist in the progress of our integration process,” the Secretary-General said in his letter of congratulations to Prime Minister Minnis.
