Nassau, THE BAHAMAS (January 15, 2014) – Armed with timely and stimulating editorial that reaches a worldwide readership of high-net-worth individuals and financial services intermediaries, The Bahamas Investor is an essential tool in the promotion and continued success of The Bahamas as a global offshore financial centre.

The January-June 2014 issue’s cover story looks at the work of The Bahamas Investment Authority (BIA) and its director of investment Joy Jibrilu. In her role, it is Jibrilu’s responsibility to guide investors through the proposal process to gain approval for their developments–essentially helping them realize their dreams. From small boutique hotels to megaresort projects, the BIA is the first port of call for investors looking to do business in The Bahamas.

Her mandate covers a wide range of projects, as The Bahamas offers many opportunities for would-be investors to diversify their portfolios, including in real estate. The lead story in the Investing section looks at the resurgent condos market in the jurisdiction. Prime beachfront locations offer unparalleled vistas, as well as a route to residency for those with $1.5-million to spend. “Condos are a hot commodity for a multiplicity of reasons. One is that it is much easier to buy and sell a condo than a home,” says Seaview Properties’ agent Jason McCarroll. The shelf life of a condo on the market is around six months, he says, making it at an attractive addition to an investment portfolio.

Moreover, the real estate offering in The Bahamas is about to expand, with the luxury Baha Mar resort and residences due to come onstream at the end of this year. The megaresort will also house the region’s largest casino, forming another stellar addition to a sector that is rapidly evolving in The Bahamas, as illustrated in this issue’s Industry feature. Global Gaming Asset Management is set to manage the Baha Mar gambling operations, which will consist of a casino with 150 gaming tables and 1,500 slot machines. The facility will also offer in-room gaming, as well as sports and online betting.

At the casino in Atlantis Paradise Island, mobile gaming is at the forefront of its expansion plans. “Internet gaming is the future,” says president and managing director George Markantonis at Atlantis, which partnered with Las Vegas-based Cantor Gaming to put in place a system that allows visitors to gamble online from anywhere within the extensive resort grounds, whether by the pool or at the beach.

Such innovations add to the overall tourism product of the jurisdiction and in an exclusive interview in the Business section, the Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe cites digital marketing and niche markets as being key to further expansion of the tourism product.

“The Bahamas has to become number one in the industry again,” says Wilchcombe. “We have to ensure that whatever sector it is, whether its weddings, or religious or leisure tourism or group visits, we have to use tourism as a platform to cause for greater diversity in the sector.”

The government has commissioned a final study of its tax reform proposals, as it gears up to introduce VAT by July 2014, and has reassured the business community that it will continue to consider alternative proposals.

Grand Bahama is experiencing a "renaissance," according to Prime Minister Perry Christie, who says new international flight routes to Freeport combined with the imminent opening of the Memories Grand Bahama Resort and Casino are reviving interest in the island.
